Day 12

The wet streets welcomed us onto their clean and shiny cobblestones, no competition now for space on the roadway due not only to the wet but the time of day. We spread our arms and took up the whole road following the easy to find Camino yellow arrows accompanied by an Aussie friend we have linked up with again, she had bought me a yellow arrow on a ring for my birthday. We’re back to [...]

Day 11

We started out early again an hour before sunrise when the myriad of small birds singing in the nearby hedges and dancing on them. What a lovely way to be farewelled. Over undulating landforms through now mainly grape vines we made our way along windless lane ways the moon and stars slowly melting away. We arrived in the village of Azofra on a mild cloudy day and sat in the main street (tiny footpath) for lunch. [...]

Day 10

The long narrow streets lit with lamps showed us out of this medieval village, narrow balconies seeming to peer down on us, but no human folk could be seen. Once the street lights faded away, the half moon shined its light ahead of us, and if we had any concerns about the direction we should take, the ‘north star’ kept loyally to our left. We walked with other pilgrims through the poppy-lined lanes separating [...]

Day 9

Last night we attended a concert. An orchestra made up of children from a nearby village entertained us with Phantom of the Opera. The next morning venturing out of Los Arcos (after a breakfast of coffee, toast, cake, fruit and fruit juice at our Albergue), into wide spacious fields, we were reminded that we were still travelling in the right direction when our backs became very warm. The sun had already risen but was behind [...]

Day 8

Heavy rain woke us up but rain drops guided us out into the shadows of a high rocky hill, the top of which was clothed in wisps of soft cloud that filtered through into a cloud filled cover for our 20ks walk to Los Arcos. Some Wisteria type bushes, yellow bracken and a handful of Poppies gathered intermittently on what was otherwise a narrow curling path through lush wheat fields bordered by high distant hills. [...]

Day 7

What a delightful night in Lorca at the 'refugio' owned by a Spaniard and his Korean partner where we  dined with an American  man, a German man, a Swedish man and a lovely younger American couple. We mostly solved home brewing issues in the world and reflected on our journeys so far, the couple were especially interested in my blog and photos. His step dad has Parkinsons and has my blog address so happy if [...]

Day 6

Dinner with three very funny people, an Aussie woman, a British man and a Swedish woman was very entertaining in which we solved the political, religious and ethical problems of the world. Two are walking for religious reasons, the other for adventure.   Our adventure continued when we left Uterga, again in the moonlight but missed a turn off, and went a further 2kms that we didn't need. Once again flat narrow paths lead [...]

Day 5

Once again the moon guided us out over yet another glorious medieval bridge through some winding streets that unusually had no pattern to them, past buildings tall and elegant shadowing their narrow streets, entertained by the sound of lots of little birds and the crowing of roosters. On our way out on a narrow, stony unshaded track through fields of Canola oil crops dotting the green landscape, with the distant hills beckoning us on, [...]

Day 4

We dined with our delightful teasing Swiss friend, enjoying a cultural exchange while missing her friend who was ill. An early set off, we searched with a young American for the sign of the Camino, a yellow arrow.  The full moon strained to show us the narrow rocky path that wound its way across the mythical Zubiri bridge, past a small but crashing waterfall, and continued its winding ways across healthy paddocks where sheep and [...]

Day 3

A photo in my last post shows me with my mouth open looking towards the valley. I'm  practising my speech therapy (not gasping at the view) but at this early stage it sounds like I'm in pain. Many with Parkinsons lose much of their voice quality and volume and the exercises are designed to open up that part that has lost its flexibility. In one session only, I found my voice strengthen markedly. Leaving this [...]
