About Will Boag

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2010 and am in the middle stages. My symptoms include a decline in muscle movement; occasional muscle spasm and internal trembling of the left side of my body and mouth; intermittent external trembling of my left arm; restless arms and legs; decreased facial expressions; an abnormally high production of phlegm; tiredness; and lower voice intonation. These symptoms have mostly remained unchanged since diagnosis. This walk is about showcasing that life doesn't end with Parkinson's, in my case it has given me a kick-start to live an rich life and working towards the best possible outcome.

Day 7 Tournehem-sur-la-Hem to Wisques

Another huge breakfast allowed us to also make lunch again for there will be no shops on the way. Our walk seems to be more well known as villages become smaller and walkers more noticeable. This makes it easier to get directions not only for our walk but to certain shops and sleeps. The endless torch seems to slip in and out of its fast flowing grey/white cover aided by that huge gusty breath. Early [...]

Day 6 Licques to Tournehem-sur-la-Hem

Beds are becoming hard to find so we are taking a big step and booking ahead. Ominous clouds are gathered early to wish me well for another year, as we exit our night room where the bed touches all walls bar the door entrance. Getting out was an exercise that I have never done before and being on the inside, Corrie’s was even a greater gymnastic feat. But the best shower in the world was [...]

Day 5 Guines to Licques

Our moated home was enough incentive to have a bath. The idea to be surrounded by water twice in the one night was appealing. And because we couldn’t direct the water from the bath to the shower without busting something made it doubly so. From heatwave to cold was a pleasant shock and a reason to show the extra gear in our pack was not just superfluous filling. It also allows for breath taking breaks [...]

Day 4 Calais to Guines

Calais I am sure has lots to offer but a pilgrim’s way is often taken up with basic needs, minutia, the unkind might say. Looking for a bed did not take long, looking for our path out tomorrow took a bit longer, and our dinner place was found along the way. There are bonuses with these little walks: Corrie gets to rest, along with my pack, and little pieces of gold appear unannounced by the [...]

Day 3 Dover to Calais

A short walk to the ferry today so a chance to gaze out at the rows of similar English cottages from our comfortable bed. So comfortable I forgot to take a photo from our second roof top tower, worth every step to get there. Leaving Bleriots crash site - I have a photo, mind back on the job, it was a 3 kilometre walk to the ferry station. We simply bought a ticket, showed our [...]

Days 1 to 2 Walthamstow to Dover

The three beat sound of the pigeons was accompanied by the seagull cry as we woke in our private loft three stories up in our London friends’ busy home. We were treated like celebrities as we were indulged with sweets, soup and stories catching up on things missed out on. After a bevy of games with their young boy, and the recent sounds of one younger ever smiling boy, we were escorted by their mum [...]

Changing your Brain

To change your brain, it takes a lot of work, Some hours per day and every day you need Tense focus, it is not a job to shirk, The Brain - it’s hunger cries for us to feed. But what’s the nourishment it likes the best To ease the pain that lingers deep inside And satiate its aching need - 'unrest' Then wait and watch to see what will betide? It yearns no less, for [...]

The PD Reward

In most, it’s just a very normal thing, Receiving plaudits as you strive to reach A goal, that life has helped us all to bring, To focus on, to learn and then to teach. For those who have a neuroplastic hole It’s harder to believe that this is right, ‘Cause they believe for them there is no goal, Why bother then, the evidence is tight. But there’s a crack, that needs a dose of will, [...]

Zurich

Our hiking friend, Ermanno, entertained us along with his lovely wife and two children at their home in Zurich. We talked about lots of ‘getting to know you’ things over our delicious Italian antipasto of rockmelon, prosciutto, mozzarella and other treats. Our ‘pasta’ experience continued from days just past, as our conversation wandered off into our individual stories: hiking, exercise, religion and language. Hugs, and a promise to catch up again somewhere in the world [...]
