The original reason is as a pilgrimage to replace the pilgrimage to Rome and many continue in this vein
Many use it as an adventure, to explore the Spanish peoples and countryside
Books I have read point to those who take time out for self reflection
Others are simply out for fun and a good time
A challenge is what others refer to
